Tools for Outreach: Native Freshwater Mussels & Zebra Mussels

Originally compiled by: Ohio River Valley Ecosystem Outreach Subgroup, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Revised July 2004: Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society

The "Tools for Outreach" catalogue is meant to be a resource for anyone interested in obtaining information on freshwater mussels. While by no means all inclusive, it provides the user with a range of tools to find the materials and people to answer questions, design educational units, and understand this fauna. Consider the materials in this book to be dynamic. There is no guarantee that all listed resources will be available or that the listed contact will be found at the given points of reference. Be persistent. There are default resources in other sections which may be adequate substitutes or a alternate path to the item you were originally in need of. The authors welcome your feedback and additions to make this the best tool possible. Please direct comments to:

The committee has developed a portable display to be used to promote the society. It was unveiled at the AFS meeting in Madison, WI in August 2004:

The freshwater mussels symposium at the American Fisheries Society meeting was spectacular! The trade-show booth sucked in the curious with amazing video and "eye-candy" displays, and the symposium presenters wowed the fish-heads with stunning slides and stellar performances. If you see any of the presenters - Watters, Graf, Barnhart, Haag, Szafoni, Gordon, Kitchel, Newton, and Cummings - or the Host with the Most (Welke), be sure to give them a pat on the back. A much deserved thanks goes to all for taking time out of their busy schedules to give the FMCS a "plug". - Jeremy Tiemann, symposium organizer
